In the nineteenth century European Scramble for Africa, Germany managed to grab only four colonies Togoland, Cameroons, East Africa (Tanzania) and South West Africa.
This book is a brief guide to the military aspects of the German occupation and colonization of South-West Africa, (present day Namibia). The intention is to succinctly but comprehensively narrate the wars the Germans fought, firstly against the native tribes in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and then against the Union of South Africa in the First World War until defeat and loss of the colony in 1915.
The book also details the organisation and composition of the German Colonial army, the Native forces and that of the South African forces during these campaigns, including, in detail, the arms and equipment used.
In addition, there are detailed chapters on two of the main battles of the period the Battle of Waterberg, 1904, against the Herero tribes; and the Battle of Sandfontein, 1914, against South Africa in the First World War.

Much of the text is quite cryptic. An example: "Morenga was eventually shot by Major Elliot of the Cape Mounted Rifles on 20th September 1907, for which he received, perhaps ingloriously, the Kaiser medal." Who the devil was Major Elliot & how did he & the Cape Mounted Rifles (a British/South African unit?) get into this German-African war? Why "perhaps ingloriously" on receipt of the medal? For that matter, what is the Kaiser medal? I have collected Imperial German medals for years & have never heard of such a decoration, nor could I find it on the web.
At least one significant thing is not even mentioned. Future German East Africa commander, Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck lost an eye & gained considerable experience in guerrilla warfare while fighting in Southwest Africa. Experience which he put to good use in fighting the British forces in East Africa during World War One.

Warfare in German SouthWest Africa 18841915 eBook Peter D Womack Reviews

I actually liked this a bit more than four stars worth, but that's idiosyncratic. In this campaign, the British were reasonably competent (led by a Boer general who knew his business) and the Germans less so (as well as being thoroughly outnumbered most of the time). Details are still interesting, especially the one case where the British were trapped in a situation remarkably like "The Defense of Duffer's Drift," but without the happy ending. Unless you like Christmas-1914 stories (soldiers lining up to drink together after the surrender regardless of side - it was hot work).

This is not the WWI East African campaign, where the competence was much more unbalanced, the other direction.
